The April Pedagogical Innovations Journal Club article is “Effects of Web-Based Feedback on Students’ Learning” published in 2016 in the International Journal of Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. The authors were interested in identifying factors important for providing effective feedback to students. They developed a web-based system that allowed students to periodically answer questions related to course material during class lectures. The novel element of this system is that students were provided immediate electronic feedback on their answers. When they compared the performance of students who used the system to those who did not use it, they found positive benefits for students using the system. These benefits include higher grades, increased levels of motivation, and increased feelings of competence. We will discuss the implications of these findings for your teaching.
