Schedule a SETTA
Spoken English Test for Teaching Assistants (SETTA)
The SETTA can be taken once every 12 months by University of Minnesota students to fulfill the Language Proficiency Requirements for Teaching Assistants. More information about the test and the University of Minnesota's English Language Proficiency (ELP) rating system can be found here.
If you have taken the final exam for the CSE:TALK summer program, GRAD 5105, GRAD 5102, or Foundations, you will need to wait one year from that date to take the SETTA. You also may not sign up for SETTA while you are taking one of the above courses. We recognize that reasonable exceptions to the one-year waiting period may exist. Departments may write Jeff Lindgren at email@example.com to request exceptions for their students.
Register for the SETTA
You may sign up for a SETTA two or more days before the test date. The schedule of upcoming SETTA tests is shown in the table at the bottom of this page. To register please send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org with the following information:
- First & last name
- Student ID#

Academic Field Options for SETTA Material
The material you present during the SETTA will be randomly generated from an introductory textbook in the academic field you choose from the list below. If you are unfamiliar with these disciplines, you may request a different academic field at least three weeks before you wish to take the SETTA by contacting Barbara Beers at email@example.com
We will respond promptly to your registration with a confirmation email.
If you must cancel your SETTA test, please email firstname.lastname@example.org or call 612-625-3041. Your cancellation will allow another person to take the test.
