Biography

At CEI, Ilene works with instructors and departments to (re)design courses for a broad range of learners in a variety of learning spaces. Her consulting interests include teaching for learning, access, and inclusion; creating learning-centered syllabuses; co-created teaching and learning; digital accessibility also embraces accessibility for neurodiverse learners; and working with faculty experiencing distress and difficulties in their current teaching contexts. Her teaching focus has included being a Preparing Future Faculty Program instructor of Teaching for Learning, Multicultural Teaching and Learning, and Teaching [and Learning] in Higher Education courses, and offering an Assessment Deep Dive seminar, and several pandemic-era Online Teaching and Learning short courses.

As a consultant, Ilene also draws on 40 years of undergraduate and graduate level course design and teaching in a variety of humanities and interdisciplinary programs at Mankato State University, the University of Iowa, St. Catherine University, Minneapolis Community College, and the University of Minnesota. As a researcher, she has presented locally and internationally, with recent publications including “Everybody Teach! Upending Traditional Disciplinary Curriculum to Create Co-Taught, Praxis-Based Higher Education Courses” in March 2024 Teacher’s College anthology Disrupting Hierarchy in Education, and “Designing an Inclusive Intercultural Online Participatory Seminar for Higher Education Teachers and Professionals in the 2018 book Networked Learning: Reflections and Challenges.

Beginning on 2 August 2024, Ilene will be leaving the world of formal academic work, and losing UMN email access at that point, and will continue to welcome teaching conversations and updates from past students and consultees at ilene.dawn@gmail.com.
