As associate director at the Center for Educational Innovation, Kate Martin supports the five campuses to advance educational priorities of the University and of the academic units. She oversees elements of the UMN strategic roadmap implementation, while providing operational, fiscal and managerial leadership within CEI. As supervisor of seven professional and academic staff, she aligns the team’s expertise and other CEI resources with the curricular and pedagogical goals of the UMN teaching community and educational priorities.
Much of Kate’s work centers on improving accessibility and inclusion at UMN. As a member of the Digital Accessibility Advisory Committee, Kate contributes to University-wide advocacy for and adoption of digitally accessible practices. As a program facilitator of the Student Experience Project from its 2025 inception, she provides professional learning opportunities for faculty that contribute to students’ sense of belonging and persistence through academic challenges. Kate is also collaboratively leading efforts promoting the use of reflective structured dialogue in learning environments across UMN.
Kate collaborates on the design and facilitation of workshops and webinars, faculty and instructor programs, and teaching-related events. She currently serves on the planning and development committee of the international Institute for New Educational Developers to be co-hosted by MN State and UMN at the Twin Cities campus in June of 2027.
With a Master’s in teaching English to speakers of other languages, Kate still occasionally teaches both in-person and online asynchronous graduate courses in the International Teaching Assistant Program. She has lived and worked professionally in Spain, India and Kazakhstan.
